Tanner began dancing at The Westside School of Ballet in Los Angeles, CA and with Marat Daukayev (Former Principal at the Kirov Ballet). At age 13 he moved to New York to study with the School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center. In 2002 he was the recipient of the D.A.N.C.E. (Danish American National Cultural Exchange) award, to dance as an apprentice with the Royal Danish Ballet. After this, Mr. Schwartz went on to dance with Pennsylvania Ballet, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, The Washington National Opera, The Metropolitan Opera (where he currently performs, including Live in HD broadcast performances seen in 2,000+ theaters in 66 countries) and as a guest artist with many companies throughout the country.

His repertoire includes countless versions of The Nutcracker (over 300 performances), Marius Petipa's Giselle, The Royal Ballet of London's Production of The Sleeping Beauty, Ben Stevenson's (Houston Ballet’s) Dracula, Val Canaparoli's (San Francisco Ballet's) Labarena, Chris Wheeldon's (New York City Ballet's) Carnival of the Animals, Jorma Elo's (Boston Ballet's) In on Blue, George Balanchine's Rubies and Diamonds from Jewels, The Four Temperments, Tchaikovsky pas de Deux, and Le Tombeau de Couperin, Lar Lubovitch's (American Ballet Theater's) Othello, and many more.
